Better Than a Tie: A Legacy Session Full of Heart

There are only so many neckties and cosy slippers grandparents can get—and zero that beat a photo session with the grandbabies. The Wards gifted something way more meaningful (and less itchy): time together, documented. Now, we’re capturing those special moment

We were back at the Ward family’s home in Fayetteville, TN—not long after I photographed their daughter’s Kindergarten graduation—and this time, it was the grandparents’ turn. A gift session focused on legacy, love, and getting everyone in the frame.

It was cloudy and muggy, and we were racing the rain (because what’s a photo session without a little weather drama?). Tuffy and the chickens made their usual cameo—right on cue. We moved fast, swapping people in and out like seasoned pros. The youngest wasn’t totally feeling the smile game, but I still caught a few adorable little expressions—please check out that Elvis lip. So cute I can’t stand it!

One of my favorite parts? Sneaking in some quiet moments of baby and mom. Even when babies aren’t all smiles, the snuggles, the nose bumps, the deep-in-your-arms kind of closeness—that’s the stuff that matters. That’s what makes this stage so worth documenting. It’s not about perfect. It’s about true to the stage, true to life.

This Fayetteville family photo session was special for a few reasons. Not just because we got sweet portraits of Grandma and Grandpa (though we did)—but because it gave them something they’re rarely in the center of: the story. They’re usually behind the scenes or juggling toddlers, not the ones being celebrated. So giving them their own moment? That felt extra meaningful.

I always say the Wards make it feel easy, and they do. Photographing their family on their land always feels like getting invited into something real—warm, welcoming, and full of stories. I’ve known them for a while now, and every session somehow feels like the next chapter in a story I’m lucky to keep telling.

Tuffy the cat, the chickens, a few rain clouds, and lots of real-life moments—that’s what made this one so special.

Thinking about a leagacy session of your own?

When’s the last time your parents (or grandparents) had updated photos with everyone in them? Not just candids on someone’s phone—but framed, printed, we-took-time-to-do-this kind of photos. Sometimes the best gift is simply showing up and saying, “Hey. This matters.”

If you’re looking for a Middle TN family photographer who captures generational stories and real-life connection—this is what I love to do. Reach out if you’re ready to document the people who’ve built your family’s story.
